A friendship expert explains exactly how you can make friends in one of the biggest and most isolating cities in the world. The thing about moving to a new country - or even to a new city - is that the people you meet who grew up there are likely to have a firm friendship group already. These can be hard for outsiders to break into. Recent research from the Office for National Statistics has revealed a staggering 10 per cent of 16 to year-olds regularly feel lonely — which is why loneliness has been deemed a public health hazard in the UK.
The statistics also revealed that loneliness particularly affects women more than men, single people rather than people with a partner and renters more than home owners. Big cities have a way of exacerbating loneliness — you are surrounded by people every day, yet you can feel insular and isolated.
Especially as an introvert, you can use it a screening process before you invite someone into your life. I also think people overlook a lot of potential friendship sources: we should talk to our neighbours, meet friends of friends, convert work mateship into out of hours friendship and smile at strangers. But I wanted to make this city my own by making new friends so I went about it quite deliberately, talking to people on Twitter and following up with a coffee invitation if I liked someone.
I was aware that London can get lonely so I proactively protected myself from that. Recruiting friends into your life is an interesting concept — and can be a hard one to grasp. If you meet someone you can see a potential friendship with, Leaver recommends asking them on a friend date. Especially if there is chemistry between you. If you approach it with the right level of friendliness, people will not mistake it for a come-on.
